Job Overview

Systems Engineering support to activities of the Space Safety Programme (S2P), in particular S2P ADRIOS and COSMIC activities initiated by the ESA/ESTEC Clean Space Office

Key Responsibilities

You will provide end-to-end systems architect support to the Clean Space Office ADRIOS and COSMIC missions projects (feasibility studies and implementation phases) in the areas of System Engineering, RendezVous and Capture Systems, platform spacecraft, technical schedule control, technical reviews organization, project risk management and project cost control.

In particular you will

  • Support the management of missions feasibility and development contracts with industry regarding service, system and subsystems aspects.
  • Review the design and verification documents, their specifications and justifications
  • Review progress reports; participate to progress and technical meetings; organise and participate in technical reviews; attend testing activities
  • Provide technical and management recommendations to the ESA project team
  • Report on work performed, included through dedicated document generation
  • Participate to the Office’s regular routine meetings
  • Present and promote ESA achievements, recent research and work performed at the Clean Space at conferences (once per year), and support related public relation or outreach activities
  • Support organization and preparation of conferences, webinars and workshops gathering various stakeholders (agencies, industry, operators, regulators, etc) as well as bi-lateral meetings with key partners

On a more ad-hoc basis:

  • Support mission customers (from other Directorates than OPS) including project reviews, Space Debris Mitigation compliance verification analysis, Close Proximity Operations and In-orbit Servicing and EcoDesign and Life Cycle Assessment compliance verification.
  • Support the definition and implementation of activities and technical Roadmaps for TDE, GSTP, ARTES and other ESA programs in the area of space debris mitigation, space debris remediation and ecodesign.
  • Support CDF studies in the Clean Space Office domains of expertise
  • Contribute to the collection of best-practices and elaboration of guidelines, standards and handbooks in the areas of EcoDesign, Space Debris Mitigation and Close Proximity Operations.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

You bring along a university degree in a relevant field of either mathematics, engineering or physics. In addition, at least 5 years of experience in space systems engineering in industry, in particular hands-on experience in requirements engineering and implementation at system and/or space segment and/or subsystem level.

The ideal candidate we are looking for contributes to our service team with a throughout understanding of the way of working the following areas:

  • Familiarity with project deadlines and ESA review processes
  • System Engineering expertise
  • Good understanding of In-Orbit Servicing and Close Proximity Operations State of the Art
  • Previous involvement in advanced mission phases (Phase C/D) and/or in the early design phase (Phase A/B)
  • Familiarity with Space segment aspects of Space Debris Mitigation assessment and solutions (remediation, mitigation, risk assessment – reentry, successful disposal, break-up, etc.)
  • Proactiveness, autonomy, ownership and high sense of responsibility for the own work and for the overall project goals
  • Ability to apply knowledge to develop pragmatic solutions to technical systems engineering problems in cooperation with customers and other experts
  • Ability to work independently but communicate effectively and efficiently within a larger team.
  • Good communication, presentation and negotiation skills
  • Good teamwork and workplan coordination skills
  • Fluency in English, both in speech and writing

Desirable Skills

Additional desirable skills are: 

  • Experience in dealing with external interfaces in a large project environment
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities; multiple missions simultaneously.
